Ingredients:

  • 2 (15 oz / 425 g) cans black beans, rinsed and drained well
  • 1 cup (90 g) rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) red onion, finely minced
  • 3 cloves (15 g) garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15 g) tomato paste
  • 1 tsp (5 g) smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp (5 g) ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp (3 g) chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3 g) salt
  • 1/4 tsp (1 g) black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Pat the rinsed black beans with a paper towel until no longer dripping.
  2. Place beans in the food processor and pulse 5-7 times until beans are broken down but still chunky; do not puree.
  3. Transfer beans to a mixing bowl. Stir in minced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, tomato paste, and all dry spices.
  4. Fold in the rolled oats and Panko breadcrumbs. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to allow oats to hydrate.
  5. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions (roughly 1/3 cup each).
  6. Roll each portion into a ball, then press down into a patty about 3/4 inch thick.
  7. Press a small indent into the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent doming during cooking.
